GS is benign and there have been suggestions of a protective benefit  to  patients  via  the  antioxidanteffect  of  unconjugated bilirubin.4,5,18 Studies have shown a lower incidence of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, endometrial cancer and cancer-related mortality in patients with GS when compared to the general population. Furthermore, the overall mortality rate is lower in individuals with mild hyperbilirubinaemia due to GS, compared to the general population. A diagnosis of GS does not progress to chronic liver disease  or  affect  a  patient’s  life  expectancy.
